1. How To Play Teamfight Tactics: The Basics
Teamfight Tactics can be a bit overwhelming for new players. So here’s a TFT beginner guide to get you started.
If you’re wondering how to win TFT, all you have to do is beat 7 other players in an 8-player free for all match. But don’t worry…so long as you’re in the “final three” you still technically win.
The game goes in rounds. Sometimes you’ll be fighting against other players for gold and XP, and other times you’ll be fighting NPC monsters to gain gold and other powerful items.
In fact, most of the game is spent acquiring XP, gold, items, and champions.
Each round, you’ll have a chance to spend gold to either refresh your shop (where randomized champions can be bought), draft champions to your team, or purchase extra XP.
XP determines how many champions you can have out on the board at a given time. Be sure to keep that in mind. You don’t want to be suddenly facing off against armies unprepared.
2. How To Play TfT: The Carousel
You should also know that the game begins with what’s called “the carousel”.
Players stand in a circle around a carousel of randomized starter champions equipped with a basic item.
After a bit of time, everyone will then be given the chance to pick one of the rotating champion/item combos. Make sure you choose wisely; you don’t want your competition to get an edge over you from the start.
Carousel rounds also appear periodically throughout the game – each time with more and more powerful champion/item combos to choose from.
Download the app and play TfT now (in the cloud and on Android).
3. Forming A Team in Teamfight Tactics
Once you have a few champions and items packed away, it’s time to start strategizing.
TFT is all about combinations.
You can combine 3 of the same champion to upgrade them into a single better version. However, they all have to be the same tier to combine – Tier 3 being the max rank for any single champion.
Combining items is also a thing in this game mode. You can combine 2 of 9 basic items to form much more powerful items with unique effects to power up your champions.
It’s also important to watch for the origin and class of each of your champions.
Forming teams with multiple champions of the same origin or class will lead to powerful buffs to give you an edge over the other players.
If you’re curious about what combinations there are and which buffs you’d like to try out, keep reading below. You’ll learn everything there is to know about the champions, items, origins, and classes available in TFT.
Download the app and play TfT now (in the cloud and on Android).
4. Champions and Items
Because of the nature of Teamfight Tactics, there are a TON of combinations you can mix and match. Which means every game will need a new strategy for you to be the last person standing.
Check the charts below to make sure you’re matching the best TFT champions with the best items combos.
As of right now, here is everything to combo in the game. (You can read more about Origins and Classes further down.)

Pro Tips & Tricks
If you’re looking for more specific tips…
If you’ve spent hours lurking on Reddit and other online forums for the best advice…
Then look no further!
We’ve saved you all that trouble by interviewing our own developer Greg Wrobel, who just so happens to be a Teamfight Tactics fanatic!
(Not to be confused with Fnatic…)
Curious what his top tips & tricks are? Then check out below where we’ve included his best tips & tricks for reaching First Place in your next match!
1) Always buy XP before your first round with a player so you’ll have an extra champion to play.
2) Always match the best combination of weapons with the best champions.
3) Don’t hoard your gold – try to spend it on a regular basis. It’s great if you’ve collected 10g or 20g…but 50g is way too much.
4) Be careful shuffling the shop. It’s easy to lose lots of gold searching for your ideal champion.
5) If you can combine two golden spoons – do it! You’ll instantly increase your team size by one.
6) Always check what other players are collecting and form a strategy around it.
7) Trade out your 1g champions as the game progresses. They’ll become too weak for later stages of the game. (**Unless you can raise them to 3rd level or they’re key to your strategy.)
8) Keep up to date with patch notes. Riot frequently rebalances the game.
9) Choose the right weapon for the right character. The efficiency of a weapon differs depending on the character.
10) If you are collecting pirates for extra gold, try to exchange them during the later stages. In the late game, gold isn’t as important and you’ll find other synergies work better.
11) Always collect Golden Spatulas when they appear. Combining them with other items can add origins/classes to your champions or even increase your team size!
12) If you lose with a certain set-up, don’t be afraid to switch things up.
13) When fighting the golems, be sure to fight them one at a time. If you try to fight against all of them at once, you’ll decrease your chances to win.
Conclusion
You should now have everything you need to form the best TFT strategy you can.
But, even if your tactics are flawless, you’ll run into trouble if your computer is a relic.
Teamfight Tactics is a very time-based game. You have to always be planning your next move, rushing to get the best champions, and positioning your team.
If your PC is running too slow, you’ll have trouble keeping up with the other players. And then it doesn’t matter how good a strategy you have or how amazing your team is.
But the good news is there’s a faster way to play Teamfight Tactics through Vortex, multi-platform cloud gaming service.
You’ll stream Teamfight Tactics directly from our powerful servers. So, you won’t have to worry about any graphical or performance issues anymore.
