Apex Legends is the latest, surprise entry into the growing list of battle royale games competing for your attention.

Is Apex Legends really a Fortnite-killer?

1. Apex Legends vs Fortnite: Battle of Gameplay
You might be surprised, but apart from being shooter-games with a last-man-standing format, Apex Legends and Fortnite have little in common.
Unlike Fortnite and other battle royale games, Apex Legends is a 1st-person shooter game.
Of course, you can’t be as situationally aware as with Fortnite’s 3rd-person gameplay. But a 1st-person perspective makes the entire experience more realistic.
Compared to Fortnite, Apex Legends also has more refined shooting mechanics and an effective revival system.
Look at the table below:
|Shooting mechanics||Aim feels accurate and satisfying. Close-quarters-combat feels consistent.||Aim feels inconsistent. More focus on Close-quarters-combat.|
|Revival system||You can be revived by teammates. If your whole team is down, you lose.||Once you die, you’re eliminated, even if you’re playing as part of a team.|
|Overall Gameplay||The focus is on team-based tactics and FPS gameplay. Your shooting skills are most important. There is little variety in gameplay for now.||Gameplay at higher levels becomes about being highly skilled with the building system rather than just shooting. More variety overall due to gameplay events.|
You can also move faster and smoother in Apex Legends. And can actually:
- climb up buildings
- and slide down hills with ease.
Apex Legends has precise and useful in-game tutorials too. In Fortnite, you’re pretty much all on your own once you’re in the battleground.
Fortnite’s gameplay is more about variety and fun. It brings something new and unique to battle-royale games with its building system.
Apex Legends has more refined gameplay. 1st-person perspective adds more depth and accuracy to the action in the game. It is very much about tactics and shooting.
But what effect does this have on how the games feel? Keep reading!
2. Apex Legends and Fortnite Game Mode: Squad vs Variety
Apex Legends comes in a squad-only mode. This is new to the battle royale space.
What does squad mode mean?
You compete in teams of three and bank on team synergy. It syncs perfectly with the Jumpmaster feature.
The feature randomly chooses a player from your team who decides where the team lands on the map. It helps your team land on the same spot together and improves team play.
Fortnite has a variety of game modes. You can go solo or in teams of two or more.
The initial spawning is done differently than in Apex Legends too. You land where you direct your parachute to land. Doesn’t matter if you’re playing in a squad and have landed at different places.
Fortnite: you always decide where to land.
Apex Legends: one player (Jumpmaster) decides where to land on a map.
3. Apex Legends vs Fortnite: Battleground Feel
Respawn’s brainchild is a high-octane action game. With traditional, meaty shooter-game elements, it’s high on grit and military vibes.
The whole battleground feels badass.
If you love games with realistic graphics, Apex Legends is king.
Fortnite’s environment is strangely comical and quite serious at the same time. It’s weirdly charming and constantly changing with new elements.
Epic Games got really creative with Fortnite, with pleasant and poetic names for places like:
- Tomato Town
- Wailing Woods
- Perilous Prison
Fortnite also makes lots of pop-culture references, and in-turn gets referenced by pop culture.
For instance: in May last year, it introduced an Avengers: Infinity War crossover event in the game where players could grab the infinity gauntlet and play as Thanos.
Many athletes across games were also inspired by the Fortnight dance emotes. In fact, some of them even celebrated their accomplishments in Fortnite battle royale dance style!
I love how you can play Fortnite simply for the sake of playing it. And create memories than just shoot your guts out to win.
Fortnite has a goofy charm. It certainly makes gaming more memorable and fun.
Apex Legends feels more realistic and adventurous to play. I was high on adrenaline the whole time I played the game!
4. Apex Legends vs Fortnite: Cross-Platform AVAILABILITY
Part of Fortnite’s easygoing charm lies in its easy availability.
You can play it on all devices, including:
It also allows for cross-platform gaming.
You can actually play Fortnite everywhere! In the cloud (play Fortnite now), PC or Android, and switch to another device without losing your game progress!
Apex Legends, on the other hand, is available only on the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
There is no mobile version of this game yet, but thanks to the cloud gaming…. you can play Apex Legends on your Android (play now).
There are plans for launching Apex Legends on mobile. For the time being, unfortunately, there are a lot of fake apps that might grab your attention.

5. Apex Legends vs Fortnite: What Makes Them Unique?
I started every battle royale game the same way.
As a helpless player looking for loot.
But in Apex Legends, I could be so much more. I could be a technology tracker (Bloodhound) or a combat medic (Lifeline).
I could be four more legendary characters with passive, tactical and ultimate abilities. All of them starting from scratch as a team.
As opposed to this, Fortnite has no legends. Or any characters with special abilities. Players are interchangeable and all start the game with a pickaxe.
I found playing as legends much more thrilling. I had more personality and skills which made the fights more twisted and interesting.
For example, I loved being a cold-hearted and unforgiving assassin (Wraith – the interdimensional skirmisher) with the power to move through time and space.
And to add to all of this, there are in-game champions I could buy (like Mirage – the holographic trickster)
Fortnite’s building system sets it apart from all other games in the battle royale space.
The game is high on strategy despite all the goofy elements and cartoonish vibes.
The building system allows you to build towers and fortresses to get a better vantage point for shooting other players. It also helps you shield yourself from gunfire while you walk around in Fortnite world.
You can navigate the map better and escape from other contenders easily.
All the building adds new depth to the genre and increases skill-cap for hardcore players. In fact, Fortnite is meant for players with all skill levels.
Unlike Fortnite, there’s no building system in Apex Legends. Although, some legends could function in a similar manner.
For instance, at Gibraltar, I could dodge bullets and protect myself from grenades. But unlike Fortnite, Apex Legends doesn’t let you fight and build at the same time.

In conclusion: Is Apex Legends a Fortnite killer?
Apex Legends might’ve gotten a stealth launch by EA in early February, but it saw a record 25 million downloads within the first week of its release.
Ever since then, people have been hailing Respawn’s battle-royale baby as a Fortnite-killer!
But is it really true?
Look at the key takeaways for both games!
Key Takeaways: Apex Legends
- Skilled-characters, so that you don’t feel completely powerless even when you start the game
- The Jumpmaster start to ensure your team lands at the same spot
- A state-of-the-art in-game ping system to help you communicate with your team
- An awesome revival system
- A badass battleground where all the action unfolds
Unlike, Fortnite, Apex Legends is high on military-like, high-octane action with improved team play.
But it’s hard to say if this is all that’s needed to knock Fortnite off its pedestal.
After all, Fortnite has managed to stay popular and relevant for a long time.
Key Takeaways: Fortnite
- Colorful and welcoming design for a pleasant experience
- Lots of modes to play
- Complex building system to increase skill-cap
- Dance emotes for fun gaming
Its map is constantly changing with new elements. Fortnite is available on all devices and even allows for cross-platform gaming.
Which titan takes the prize in this gigantic clash is hard to say.
But I do feel that the genre has enough space for both games to coexist and thrive.
Also, a lot depends on what you prefer.
Fortunately, both games are free to play. So dive right in and figure out what suits you best!
Note: New games like Apex Legends will often require the latest hardware to run smoothly. Want to play it without much hassle on the old rig or Android?
