Ping is the value that shows you the minimum time needed to send the smallest possible amount of data and receive a response from a server. Ping is measured in ms (milliseconds). 1000 milliseconds equal 1 second. The lower the ping is, the faster the website is loading.
Our free ping test tool sends ICPM (Internet Control Message Protocol) packets to the host address to measure the response time. It gives you a clue about the host's availability and performance of your Internet connection. Once packets are sent to the host, the ping test will report back to you the duration of each ICMP ping request. It will also provide you with a status of the request (good or bad).
Ping value influences gaming over the internet and internet telephony (Skype). Low latency is very important for online gaming, especially for competitive games and professional players. It’s basically because higher ping means that your every action will be delayed by the value of your latency. I will use a simple example to describe what it means to a gamer. Your opponent (we can use Fortnite as an example) is running. You are aiming at him with your gun but your ping is 500ms. That means the moment you pull the trigger (use the left mouse button) and your character actually shoots, your opponent will be around 5 meters away from the place you shot at. Now you can see why low latency is so important. Of course it does not matter so much for casual players, because only professionals will see the difference between 40 ms and 60ms. If you are a gamer, a reasonable ping value is lower than 50ms.
Run ping test to check if your connection is good enough to:
No, if you want to check your ping using your computer, you can run ping commands on your Mac or PC. However, checking your ping online is much faster and of the same accuracy.
The most important thing you can do is to use plug-in cable connection instead of Wi-Fi or switch to 5GHz router. If you are forced to use Wi-Fi , take notice that the distance from router is also important. Make sure you are not downloading anything during your multiplayer match. If your internet bandwidth is not good, you can even think about turning off youtube/facebook during a game. Make sure that anyone who is sharing the Internet with you is not overloading it. Someone connected to the same Wi-Fi might be watching the last episode of Game of Thrones on HBO GO at the same moment you are trying to frag the last opponent and become the champion in Apex Legends. And because of your high ping, both of you will have a terrible experience.
